What Does a Hydronic Air Handler Do?
An air handler, or fan-coil convector, is effectively a furnace that is heated by hot water. Water that has been heated by a high-efficiency water heater or boiler passes through a coil in much the same way as the fluid in your car heating system passes through the radiator.
The air is then blown across the coil and forced through the duct system to heat the space. We often replace a furnace with an air handler when we install a high-efficiency storage-tank water heater utilizing the existing ductwork.
Is Hydronic Heating More Efficient Than Forced Air?
Yes, the advantages of a hydronic heating system are increased energy efficiency, decreased sound, and increased safety, as they eliminate the risk of carbon monoxide from the combustion chamber entering the ductwork and being distributed around the home.
